| The camel race was not won by Successful Spin! |
"Winner at Broome's opener"
Successful Spin won for the fourth time in his career at Broome's opening meeting on Saturday.
He has always performed better at the beginning of his campaigns and Angela Smith prepared to the minute for his first up run. Despite this, her aim was always to take him to Derby, where he won two in a row last year and seemed to appreciate the tight, dusty track.
He has again been nominated for the opening Derby meeting this weekend in a 1400m 53+ handicap. Angela will be looking for a new rider after apprentice Ellie Cockram was outed for 12 days for tightening she caused when Successful Spin crossed to the front on Saturday.
Spinner has had two starts at Derby for two narrow wins last year.
Meantime, Husslehoff performed well at his first start on Broome's unique dirt surface. After being slightly slow away, he resented racing in the field with the backwash, but once he pulled off heels at the top of the straight, powered home to be narrowly beaten into third.
The Hoff will take a huge amount of improvement from the experience and we expect him to go well at Broome's next meeting on June 16.
Shadow Hussler didn't appreciate his first look at the track, jumping well enough but refusing to gallop for the first half of the race. He was tailed off upon straightening, but made some ground in the straight. He'll appreciate the experience and a bit more ground at his next attempt.
