Werd beaten narrowly in the Flower

"A fighting third"
Werd has fought it out strongly first up in the Cyril Flower Stakes over 1200m at Ascot on Saturday.

He was always going to be vulnerable first up at the 1200m. Campbell McCallum jumped him well, as per usual and then had the rare opportunity of trailing the speed behind Highly Toxic. Werd pulled off heels at the top of the straight and with 50m to go was still in front, but his condition just gave in, finishing third just a half length behind the winner, Westriver Kevydon.

Werd had a three week spell after his fighting second in the Summer Scorcher and had only been back in work for four weeks prior to Saturday's run.

It was a run that will put him in good stead for his next assignment, the Listed WATC Stakes in three weeks over 1100m.
