| Werd Winning for Andrew Castle |
"From Restricted to Open Class in One Preparation"
The gutsy Hussonet five year old gelding Werd made it three wins from his last four starts and took his career earnings to $225,600 from just 22 career starts.
Ridden by apprentice Andrew Castle for the first time, Werd settled just behind the leader Lachino. At the 600m mark Castle extracated Werd off the fence to set out after Lachino. At the top of the straight Werd was breathing fire down Lachino's neck and at the 250m mark put paid to him. Castle hit him with the stick at the 200m mark and the race was over. Werd pinned his ears back and over the concluding stages looked to be playing with his rivals.
In 19 starts for Gangemi Racing and Ascot Bloodstock Werd has now won 6 races and been placed a further 7 times.
The fact that Werd is still up and racing at his top at the end of May after having his first up run at the beginning of February is a testament to the training ability of everyone concerned. This campaign he has had eight starts plus and trial and is still racing at the top of his game. John, Chris and Michael Gangemi have certainly got the best out of Werd this preparation.
Werd is likely to now head towards another 1000m race in a fortnight. He has now won from 1000m-1250m and was only just run down over 1400m two starts ago. Now that he has reached Open class Werd will be aimed towards some of the better sprint races over the Festival Of Perth Racing this summer.
